A Tiny Journey with Digweed

TAKE YOUR OWN JOURNEY
WITH DIGGERS @ ELECTRIC ZOO
SUNDAY SEPT 5TH
SUNDAY SCHOOL GROOVE TENT
9:30PM to 11:00PM

So I took a little journey this morning and listened to the first CD of John Digweed’s latest DJ mix. But it was more than that. I’ve been in a particularly focused headspace these past few months thinking about Principles – what they are and what they do. And I’m adding another bit to the concept – the idea of Ritual. So as of right now, Principles are ideas you stick to no matter what (with regard to the mental world), and Rituals concern stability with regard to the physical world. And I suppose, Routines would be Rituals and Principles together on a timeline.

Anyway…

So I combined a bunch of Rituals this morning while listening to the mix. In my pajamas and Invader Zim slippers, drinking jasmine tea, turn the fake fire on, set out the broken floor chair in the middle of the room, light some incense, grab the latest copy of Sports Illustrated. Push play.

I consider myself pretty patient when it comes to listening to music, but with purposefully repetitively progressive music with sparse vocals, it really is difficult to just sit quietly and listen. Thus – the rituals. I read the magazine cover to cover while I was listening, mostly unaware of the specifics of the music, just riding the energy shifts.

I suppose, rather than absorbing my environment for that hour this morning, I was, eh, exsorbing. I became the incense, the pajamas, the slippers, the magazine, the chair, the fire, the lazy cats, the tea. I became the music. And those are a lot of things to exist as for 72 minutes! Not really moving. Not thinking. Not really doing anything. Exsorbing.

I couldn’t tell you what tracks were on the mix (you could probably play it for me right now and I wouldn’t recognize it), and I only remember the gist of one article I read in SI. But I’m sure that information is locked in my head somewhere now, for whatever purpose it may serve. And it was a very centering experience. Just being, but not lazily. Bringing information in, allowing energy out, very focused and awake, but in an intentional dream-state.

Kind of interesting.

And totally free from circumstances. I can create, with substitutions as necessary, that same combination of rituals, any time I want. I think that’s a little bit of what I was testing …

As for the album itself:

If you’re one of the people who likes John Digweed, you’ll like it. If you’re one of the people who defends Digweed’s music that you’ve never heard, you’ll defend it. If you appreciate the Transition series, you’ll appreciate it. Nice music, especially right at the beginning. Professional flow and technically appropriate, as all Digweed comps are. It drops into a deeper groove near the end. Doesn’t register as anything groundbreaking, won’t be a classic like some of his others. It’s a good example of a straight DJ set, and that’s about that. For historical and purist reasons, it should be required listening for every aspiring DJ – music most certainly ‘done right’.

So, for my little journey this morning, I meditated on the ideas of Principles, Rituals, and Routines, and had a little music to guide me through. Rather fitting that the album title of Digweed’s mix – is “Structures”.

Rumor Mill: LovEvolution 2010 Cancelled

So, I wanted to address all the rumors going around about LovEvolution. In case you haven't heard, people have been blabbing about LovEvolution being CANCELED. So far this is 100% NOT TRUE. What we do know is that there is a lot of pressure on the organizers for this event, in light of the recent tragedies of Love Parade and EDC. Authorities in California are keeping a watchful eye on what they deem as "raves". The event might be scaled down and moved from it's Market St route and location in front of City hall. This has not been confirmed.

OK, so here is the bad news for all you Spundae fans. Even thought there will be a Spundae float, the after party is however canceled.

LovEvolution has not made any official announcements but a friend did FWD me this email: (It's not a government secret so I took the liberty of posting it!)
From: SF LovEvolution <info@sflovevolution.org>
Subject: Re: Satus of festival

Date: Wednesday, August 18, 2010, 12:07 AM

We are going through a bunch of talks w the city re: our location and other event logistics.

That's why we haven't been able to update people. We are 99% on for the event, but not sure as to the location.

We hope to announce any day now!

Stay tuned.

Hello,

Messaging you from sunny Florida. So I've been hearing rumors that Lovevolution is canceled this year? Is this true? I figure it's just a rumor at this point because there has been no official word on the site. I'm curious because I am currently planning my trip. About to book flights and hotels and it would be a complete waste if I did it for no reason. :-( Any info to clear up this rumor for me would be greatly appreciated. Take care and see you in October if all is well.

A good Reason visit to North Carolina? MOOG

My friend Gabe AKA Casper sent me the info for this festival. I never thought Ashville would be a place I would want to go to but when I saw the line up for Moog, it makes me very tempted.

Especially the fact that the last day is Halloween!!! Of course my friend that I nick named after a ghost had to send me the info for a festival during Halloween, how fitting. Last day ends with a Halloween party, headlined by Pretty Lights and Hot Chip and yes costumes are welcomed!

The travel packages offered are not so tempting. They start at $1,199 STEEP! I bet me and my buddy kayak.com could probably find a better deal. Tickets are a good value: day tickets are $75, weekend passes are totally worth it for $149.50.

Latest Press Release:

MOOGFEST ADDS HOT CHIP, PRETTY LIGHTS, GIRL TALK, PANDA BEAR, DAN DEACON, FOUR TET, RJD2, EL-P, DÂM-FUNK, SCHOOL OF SEVEN BELLS, MATMOS, EMERALDS AND MORE TO 2010 LINEUP!

MASSIVE ATTACK, THIEVERY CORPORATION, BIG BOI, MGMT, JONSI AND CARIBOU ALSO CONFIRMED TO PERFORM.

Costumes are welcome. . . and clearly treats will be in abundance!

The MoogFest 2010 weekend kicks off on Friday with performances by the previously announced MGMT and Big Boi, plus Girl Talk, Panda Bear, RJD2 and others. Artists joining Massive Attack, Thievery Corporation and Jonsi for Saturday at the festival will include Four Tet, Caribou, Emeralds, and Matmos. The festival’s final day will be a Halloween party like none other, with performances by Hot Chip and Pretty Lights topping the bill.

Also confirmed to appear at MoogFest 2010 are EL-P, Dan Deacon, School of Seven Bells, Saturn Never Sleeps (Featuring King Britt & Rucyl), Dâm-Funk, Nortec Collective Presents: Bostich & Fussible, the Octopus Project, Jon Hopkins, Mimosa, Kuroma, Mountain Man, DJ Spooky and Two Fresh.

These internationally renowned performers, known for pushing creativity towards new dimensions, will play in multiple venues throughout downtown Asheville, including the Asheville Civic Center Arena, the Thomas Wolfe Auditorium, and Asheville’s world-class club, the Orange Peel.

There’s more to come! Additional artists will be joining the line up in the coming weeks, plus there will be news about late night shows and special events in clubs and venues throughout Asheville. And information regarding MoogFest 2010’s workshops, panel discussions, art exhibitions, installations and film screenings, will be announced in the coming weeks as well.

Decibel 2010 News

Anticipation is building for 2010 Decibel Festival and with only a month out, we're excited to announce this year's complete festival program.

Our biggest addition to the festival is none other than Flying Lotus, whose 2010 album 'Cosmogramma' has made the young artist one of the most critically acclaimed and influential electronic producers in the world. Flying Lotus will be performing Thursday night as part of the FlyLo and Friends Showcase, which also features West Coast luminaries Eskmo, Lorn, Samiyam and Seattle's own Truckasauras.

Other major announcements include the expanded dB in the Park events (Saturday and Sunday at The Mural Amphitheater in Seattle Center) and the 2010 dB Conference (Wednesday through Friday at Pravda Studios).

The final program includes a free three day conference, 27 showcases across 11 different venues and over 100 artists representing 15 countries (see SHOWCASES below).

Both passes and individual showcase tickets are limited, so we encourage you to purchase them in advance to guarantee admission (see PASSES / TICKETS info below).
FLYING LOTUS TO HEADLINE dB
Flying Lotus is more than a fearless beat scientist, innovative artist, label head, community leader and intrepid explorer of spiritual sound; he is a portal to the future of music.

Taking an eclectic, wide-brained approach, Flying Lotus' sound includes a thick amalgamation of musical species: hip-hop, funk, IDM, jazz, dubstep, psychedelia and glitch, baked together with experimental rhythms and soulful style to create an entirely new electronic experience.

Flying Lotus isn't just a producer, and this isn't just music. This is mythology, a story of beats and bass, and it swirls around Flying Lotus like blunt smoke on the balcony of Low End Theory. He has introduced the infinite possibilities of jazz to a whole new era of listeners, and his soothing presence encourages the mental release necessary to join an avant-garde artist on his musical explorations.

The central figure of the Los Angeles-based Brainfeeder clan and record label, Flying Lotus is also an inspiration to an entire global community, an intimate group of heads for whom his shifty beats and elemental bass are pathways to another realm. The significance of his sound stretches as far as the inner journey that his listeners are willing to take, for Flying Lotus understands the deep connection between human beings and music. It is in this space between that the sonic shaman travels.
